A Critique of Ã¢â¬ÅUncovering the Past The Role of Dust Imagery in A ROSE FOR EMILYÃ¢â¬Â - Literature Essay Samples
Aubrey Binders Ã¢â¬Å"Uncovering the Past: The Role of Dust Imagery in a Rose For EmilyÃ¢â¬ explains that the motifs of dust and decay are very important and prominent in Faulkners story. BinderÃ¢â¬â¢s arguments for the motifs are strong, especially for the motif of dust. However, her article provides very little literary evidence for the motif of decay. While I agree with BinderÃ¢â¬â¢s motif of dust, I donÃ¢â¬â¢t agree with her arguments for the motif of decay, and I believe that the motif of pity would better fit the text. BinderÃ¢â¬â¢s motif of dust is heavily supported in the text. She believes that the dust covering the objects and people in EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s home represents the obscuring of past events. She makes it very apparent that the dust does not change or erode the past, it simply hides it. (Binder 5) The dust provides ambiguity which helps to keep the townspeople clueless about whats really going on inside EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s home. To support this statement, Binder points out that Homer Barrons body was covered in an Ã¢â¬Å"even coating of the patient and biding dust.Ã¢â¬ This quote exemplifies how the dust really conceals parts of EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s life from the townspeople. When the townspeople found HomerÃ¢â¬â¢s body, its like the dust was being brushed away, revealing the truth of the past. The dust shows how events from the past are sometimes discovered, so the dust does not make Emily invincible from outside presence. The dust is brushed away and the past is revealed, altering Miss EmilyÃ ¢â¬â¢s life several times throughout the text. Binder provides an example of this when the government officials come to Miss Emily and tell her that she owes taxes to the town. When the officials enter Miss EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s home, they disturb the dust and uncover the fact that Emily does owe taxes to the town. However, Emily, disliking change, held onto Colonel SartorisÃ¢â¬â¢ involved story that made her exempt from taxes. Binder also states that other elements that arent actual events in the story also are affected by the dust. Binder uses the example of the continuous influence of EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s father even after his death. Ã¢â¬Å"The house filled with dust and shadowsÃ¢â¬ is a quote from the text that shows how EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s father influenced her life. He left her with a very small amount of money, and no husband because of his strict standards. EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s father made her unavailable to be wed, Binder links the psychological damage that her father inflicted on her to HomerÃ¢â¬â¢s murder. Emily murdered Homer so that he could never leave her. This idea was supported by the following quote from the text, Ã¢â¬Å"and we all knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will.Ã¢â¬ Emily clinged onto Homer because he was the only thing she had left. Binder claims that decay is a strong motif in this short story,however she hardly even mentions decay in her review. Binder states that, Ã¢â¬Å"The reader finds descriptions of decay in the slow degrading of the town, EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s inherited home, and even in the aging Emily herself.Ã¢â¬ After she describes how decay could be a motif, she goes on to explain the motif of dust but never revisits decay. The rest of BinderÃ¢â¬â¢s review is about how dust affected Ã¢â¬Å"A Rose for Emily.Ã¢â¬ Binder makes the very common literary mistake of not providing enough evidence from the text. She jumps to the conclusion that because Miss Emily and her house seem to be decaying that decay a major motif of this story. When really, the decay is more of a description about the setting and Miss Emily herself rather than a motif. A possible motif that is well supported by literary evidence is the motif of pity and it actually plays an important role in this story. Binder touches on the topic of how the townspeople feel sorry for Emily, but she is doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t talk about how very important their pity is. The townspeople were always slightly pitious to the GriersonÃ¢â¬â¢s because of how highly they believed themselves to be, when in reality they were not. The townspeople really pitied Emily after her father died. Ã¢â¬Å"At last they could pity Miss Emily. Being left alone, and a pauper, she had become humanizedÃ¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ When her father died, she refused to give the body up the until they threatened to use force. Ã¢â¬Å"We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that.Ã¢â¬ The townspeople didnÃ¢â¬â¢t believe that she was crazy because they knew that her relationship with her father was the only real relationship she had, so when she lost her father the townspeople felt sorry for he r. After her fatherÃ¢â¬â¢s death, the town officials remitted her taxes, but to evade the obvious charity of the act, Colonel Sartoris created a story about how EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s father loaned money to the town and that remitting EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s taxes was the towns way of repaying the loan. Another example to support the motif of pity is when Emily visits the druggist to buy some arsenic, claiming it was for killing rats. Many of the townspeople suspected that Emily was going to use the poison to kill herself, but they thought it would be Ã¢â¬Ëthe best thing.Ã¢â¬ BinderÃ¢â¬â¢s article, Ã¢â¬Å"Uncovering the Past: The Role of Dust Imagery in a Rose For EmilyÃ¢â¬ is very well thought out and really captures the story, Ã¢â¬Å"A Rose for Emily.Ã¢â¬ Her motif of dust is supported with textual evidence and is crucial to the story. The dust in Faulkners story symbolizes the secrecy of EmilyÃ¢â¬â¢s life and the unveiling of those secrets. I disagree about her arguments for decay. The element of decay is only a description in the story, however, the motif of pity is well supported by literary evidence and is a crucial element to the story. Binder, Aubrey. Along with this, considering female drivers also indicates a step towards women empowerment and changing of social attitudes. A set of question will be prepared for sharing the feedback of customers with male and female taxi drivers(Taylor, Bogdan, Vault, 2015). As talked about the case, this study will majorly use secondary data sources from the Australian Taxi Industry Association and previous trends of Uber Technologies Inc. It will be easy to understand as well as quickly be available online. Asch in his essay Ã¢â¬Å"Opinions and Social PressureÃ¢â¬ conducted an experiment to determine effects of group pressure towards an individual and concluded that there is a very strong tendency to conformity even when doing so conflicting with their own senses of morality. In the experiment a group of young students have to compare length of lines on two different sheets of paper. On one of them there is a sample single line and on the other one there are three lines only one of which is same size as the sample line from the first sheet. People taking part in this experiment are instructed to point at lines that are the same length. At first, during the experiment the group is unanimous in their answers and chooses the correct line, but later on the person that sits near to the end of the line in which people taking part in the experiment are sited, selects different answers then the rest of the group. In the experiment it is also noted that the rate of wrong answers depends to a considerable degree on how wrong the majority is. Even with significant difference in length of lines there were still individuals who agree with majority error. But consensus, to be productive, requires that each individual contribute independently out of his experience and insight. I always knew that the opinion of the group counts and itÃ¢â¬â¢s important to most of us, but would never except that the scale and strength of decision making influence techniques can be so large and effective. Society faces many different forms and techniques of decision making influences that were developed from results of the AschÃ¢â¬â¢s experiment. This techniques share common goals which are to make society to obey and find the best ways to achieve social conformity. On positive side, conformity can be used to create predictability references or to organize a convenient social structure that doesnÃ¢â¬â¢t require constant renegotiations. On the negative side, itÃ¢â¬â¢s a key to a great power over social behavior and actions. This raise questions over morality and responsibility over the actions that could be caused by manipulations. If the study was conducted on contemporary society the results wouldnÃ¢â¬â¢t be much different if not even showing stronger tendency to conformity. Living in the age of social media, mass communication networks and globalization concepts individuals are more pressured to obey, to be a part of events or actions not truly and not only by their free will. The study indicates that in big majority people are followers and they tend to obey authority and follow the opinion of majority. Awareness of how humans tend to obey comes with some tips on how we can protect ourselves from external influence. Cultivating a healthy skepticism and exercising active change in our behavior make us less vulnerable to prospective social experiments.

I was born on January 23, 1869, in New York. Both my mother and my father were journalists. My father's name is David Croly and my mother's name is Jane Cunningham. Some of my early on goals included graduating from Harvard University, and becoming a well-known journalist, both of which were later achieved. After graduating from Harvard University, I became the editor of Agricultural Record. In 1909, I published the book titled The Promise of American Life. In this book I stressed several of my political views, such as the need for a planned economy, increased spending on education, and a society based on "brotherhood of mankind." Many people believe that this book influenced Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. In 1914, a good friend of mine by the name of Williard Straight, asked me to be the first editor of the New Republic. When the New Republic was first published in November 1914, only 875 copies were made. After a year of circulation this magazine published more then 15,000. This became a strong supporter of the views of Theordore Roosevelt and the Progressive movement. When World War I first broke out, I was against Americas entry. I wanted the United States to remain neutral. After I heard about the sinking of the Luistania,I supported Americas entry, and the New Republic became a supporter of Woodrow Wilson and his decision to declare war on Germany. After the war, I began to be very critical of Woodrow Wilson and his decisions.As it is stated, I said that the Treaty of Versailles was " a treaty on annihilation." I also disliked the League of Nations, saying that it was an organization that "would perpetuate rather then correct the evils of the treaty." Sales of the New Republic increased during the war, but declined in the 1920's. I remained editor of this magazine up until my death on May 17, 1930.... From what frequent activity do you derive your greatest joy Why is this activity meaningful to you, and how does it shape your perspective on life (500 words or less) - Personal Statement Example Athletes were the epitome of power for me and, of course, I imagined myself playing. I never missed Yankee games and patiently waited for the day I would come to the stadium with my dad. However, it was not all I wanted to do in my life. Growing up, I was becoming more and more interested in the strategy of the game and baseball coaching seemed to be the best role I could have in my life. Everything changed when I had the opportunity to try myself as a coach in 11th grade. I started volunteering as a coach at the 68th Precent youth little league in Brooklyn, New York. I recollect this experience with a smile on my face because it was so great to help little kids to succeed. I was more than a coach for those kids; I tried to be a role model for them and showed that good deeds always paid back. Several children in my team had special needs and I felt really great helping them to boost their achievements in sport and in life making them more open for communication and new things. We shared many special moments with the team; even though not all of them were happy, there was a special atmosphere that surrounded our communication. All those kids reminded me of myself; I experienced the same problems, felt badly when I could not play well and was excited when my team won the game. Overall, I understood that baseball coaching was what I needed to do to be happy. This coaching experience explains many things to me. I realize that many things in life are not about winning. It is more pleasant to be happy and share happiness with other people. Brought up to be over-achievers, my generation often strives to win under any circumstances but sometimes victory does not make people happy. Victory does make people feel better for some time, but this feeling disappears and leaves nothing after it. All in all, I like baseball because it is more than a game where one should win.
